Welcome to NAME 2025 conference, Aquatic Science Extravaganza: Outdoor Explorations from the Forest to the Sea! Newport and the surrounding watersheds offer a plethora of opportunities to explore and learn about coastal dynamics including the impacts of climate change and the connections between our fresh and saltwater communities.
During the conference, you will have the opportunity to learn about the geologic and indigenous history of the area, explore tide pools, dunes, the bay, and coastal forest, discover new curriculum opportunities for students of various levels, and share your experiences and curriculum. Field experiences each day offer opportunities for kayaking, crabbing, clamming, hiking, and exploring our rocky intertidal areas and awesome sandy beaches. Evening activities include a Bayfront Progressive Party, outdoor games and music, and our fabulous gala hosted at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
We invite anyone who has a passion for water and believes that every human on earth should be water-literate, that using the allure of water enriches and facilitates learning, and that sharing our knowledge and experience with others creates a community of informed stewards to participate in NAME and this conference.

Join Denise Harrington for a leisurely kayak trip in the wetlands of Beaver Creek. The conference van will leave from HMSC at 7:00 am (or paddlers can meet at Ona Beach State Park at 7:30 am) and return to HMSC at 11:00 am (in time to get to OCCC for lunch at noon). Denise will share examples of how she uses kayaking as an educational tool. This kayak trip is good for everyone from first time kayakers to the very experienced.
Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, fleece, poly, or wool, and a waterproof layer.
Accessibility requirements: Participants must be able to carry, sit in, launch, paddle, and disembark from a kayak.
Limit 14 participants.
Join the Oregon Sea Grant Marine Education team for a two-hour estuary exploration experience on the Yaquina Bay Estuary, located adjacent to the Hatfield Marine Science Center. Participants will holistically explore the estuarine ecosystem as they learn how to identify different zones, plants, burrowing species, birds and more. We will use slurpers to dig for burrowing shrimp and clams, as well as spotting scopes, ID guides, and binoculars to get a closer look at the birds inhabiting this dynamic space.
We will be outdoors on our nearby mudflat the whole time; therefore, participants should wear rubber boots or shoes that can get dirty and bring a jacket, hat, and sunscreen, as weather can change quickly on the Oregon Coast.
Accessibility requirements: Participants must be able to stand and walk on soft, muddy sediments for part of the program.
How does the Aquarium care for a swarm of stinging jellies and dozens of toothy sharks? Travel behind the scenes with us to explore the ins and outs of caring for over 15,000 animals every day. Meet at the Aquarium entrance at 9:00 am for a 1-hour tour before the aquarium opens to the public!
Accessibility requirements: None.
Limit 15 participants.
In 2012, Otter Rock became one of the first two marine reserves implemented. Despite being the smallest marine reserve at 1.2 square miles, Otter Rock Marine Reserve has a rich diversity of marine life and provides many opportunities for scientific research, public outreach and education, and community engagement programs. High school interns are hired for the summer as interpreters. Sign up to learn more about this amazing space and program.
Accessibility requirements: Participants must be able to navigate the trail to the marine gardens, which is steep and challenging. There is a staircase at the north end of the beach that may be more manageable for participants with mobility issues.
Seaweeds are often overlooked and under-appreciated. The Oregon Coast is home to an abundant and diverse selection of seaweeds, and in fact, the PNW has more kelp species than anywhere else on earth! Look into the intricate and distinctive patterns that make up each group. Learn how seaweed is classified as well as how to identify a few local edible species. Chat about sustainable seaweed aquaculture practices, kelp restoration, and other macroalgal climate solutions.
Please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes, rain boots, or other hiking footwear). Whatever you don't mind getting wet, that will also keep your feet stable. For your own safety and comfort, do not wear flip flops or sandals. Do keep in mind your feet are likely to be in the water at some point, so rain boots are what I would strongly recommend.
Accessibility requirements: Must be able to walk down the paved hill to the beach and navigate a short stretch of rocks to get to the sand.
Join Denise Harrington for a shortened kayak trip in the wetlands of Beaver Creek. The conference van will leave from HMSC at 7:00 am (or paddlers can meet at Ona Beach State Park at 7:30 am) and return to HMSC at 10:30 am (in time to get to OCCC by 11:00 am for the plenary session).

Join the Tidepool Ambassadors of Cape Perpetua Collaborative to explore the amazing tidepools, learn about the marine bird protected area and additional information regarding our largest marine reserve and the amazing connection to the coastal forest.
Please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes, rain boots, or other hiking footwear).
Accessibility requirements: Participants must be able to walk over loose cobble and/or uneven basalt rock.
Join us for a guided hike at Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center. Yakona stewards 450 acres on the Yaquina River just inland from Oregon Coast Community College. Learn about our educational programs, restoration efforts, and the history of the land going back to the Yaqo’n/Siletz people. To learn more, check out our website at yakonaoregon.org.
Accessibility requirements: Participants must be able to hike approximately three miles on well-established trails and experience elevation loss/gain of 250-300’ multiple times. Bring water, but no pets. Long sleeves and pants are recommended.
Limit 25 participants.

National Marine Educators Association Code of Conduct
Preamble
The National Marine Educators Association, hereinafter NMEA, is the leading organization dedicated to
making known the world of water, both fresh and salt. NMEA has a long, rich history of convening people to
promote professional excellence in marine education. NMEA values diversity, respect, collaboration,
accessibility, participation, integrity, and transparency, and works to ensure these values are reflected in all
interactions. Members of NMEA come from a wide variety of backgrounds, which adds to the inherent
richness of an organization nearly 1,000 members strong.
The purpose of this Code of Conduct is to outline core principles that encourage constructive discourse,
respectful interactions, and the creation of a positive environment where our members and friends can promote
and support ocean literacy and making known the world of water, both fresh and salt.
This Code of Conduct applies to all members in respect of their activities and communications on behalf of or
in connection with NMEA, and all communications among NMEA members and with members of the public,
whether written, oral, electronic or otherwise.
All those who participate as speakers, attendees, volunteers, students, and guests in NMEA-sponsored events
are expected to adhere to this Code of Conduct as well.
Statement of Non-Discrimination
NMEA is an equal opportunity organization and does not discriminate in the offering of membership, the hiring
and firing of its employees and consultants, and the administration of its programs and activities, on the basis of
protected characteristics, including but not limited to race, color, religion, gender, age, nationality, physical or
mental disability, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, military record, and
citizenship.
Principles of Conduct
NMEA members understand that the advancement of NMEA’s mission hinges on our ability to communicate
openly and thoughtfully with others, critique and challenge one another with respect and integrity, and be
willing to change and grow. NMEA members and those who participate in NMEA events are expected to
display conduct that is consistent with the following principles:
Principle 1 – Engage in open and constructive dialogue to promote NMEA’s mission.
Principle 2 – Treat others with respect and dignity.
Principle 3 – Maintain high ethical standards, good judgment, and integrity.
Prohibited Conduct
There are certain behaviors that are directly at odds with NMEA’s mission and Principles of Conduct, have the
potential to cause NMEA and its members harm, and may, in certain instances, constitute a violation of law.
While NMEA cannot control the conduct of its members and those that participate in its sponsored activities, it
wishes to send a clear message about conduct that is not appropriate. While it is not feasible to list all the ways
our Code of Conduct may be violated, examples include, but are not limited to:
· Physical or verbal abuse of any member, or any meeting attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, service
provider, or other guest;
· Engaging in harassment, including sexual harassment, of other members, or any meeting attendee, speaker,
volunteer, exhibitor, service provider, or other guest (e.g., repeated use of derogatory or sexually explicit
language, epithets or slurs; displaying explicit images or videos; stalking; engaging in unwelcome physical
contact; making unwanted sexual advances, propositions or demands);
· Disruption of talks, poster sessions, or social functions (e.g., yelling at presenter, engaging in hostile or
threatening behavior);
· Disrespectful treatment of conference venue staff or violating conference venue rules;
· Falsifying a ticket or other document, or gaining unauthorized entry into an NMEA sponsored or
co-sponsored event;
· Plagiarism or infringement of intellectual property;
· Disclosing confidential information concerning other members, or any meeting attendee, speaker, volunteer,
exhibitor, service provider, or other guest;
· Engaging in unauthorized communications on behalf of NMEA or making intentional misrepresentations to
others concerning NMEA; and
· Any form of criminal conduct.
Consumption of alcohol or other substances is not an excuse for unacceptable behavior.
Reporting Prohibited Conduct
NMEA encourages any person who has been subject to or witnessed any behavior they believe is inappropriate
or contrary to this Code of Conduct to bring the matter to the attention of the Executive Committee of the Board
of Directors promptly.
Reports of inappropriate conduct will be reviewed by the Executive Committee and will be handled with respect
for the privacy of those involved to the extent practical.
Depending on the nature of the complaint, the Executive Committee may conduct an internal investigation,
including speaking with the individuals involved and reviewing available documents and other records. Any
investigation will be confidential to the extent practical, given the circumstances. The Executive Committee
will endeavor to address the matter promptly.
Consequences of Prohibited Conduct
In the event the Executive Committee concludes there has been a violation of this Code of Conduct, the
Executive Committee will seek to craft a resolution that addresses the matter in a constructive way. While an
appropriate resolution will vary with the circumstances, some examples may include:
· a verbal or written warning;
· being asked to leave the meeting without refund;
· being asked to step down from a committee or board position;
· being placed on probation as a member; or
· being removed from membership.
Any questions concerning this Code of Conduct should be addressed to the Executive Committee
