Mixoplankton- Rewriting how we teach and learn about oceanic production.

Dr. Aditee Mitra, Senior Research Fellow at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences in Cardiff University in the UK

Dr. Mitra has been a key driver of the new mixoplankton-centric paradigm in marine ecology that rewrites over 100 years of understanding of oceanic production.  We have all been teaching that phytoplankton are the primary producers, which are eaten by zooplankton, and then the rest of the food web. However, her work, which has been identified by Scientific American as one of "13 discoveries that could change everything," shows us that marine food organisms cannot be simply categorised as plants making food and animals eating plants. Marine food webs are much more complex than expected. Come learn about these essential organisms driving marine ecology from one of the global experts on mixoplankton biology and evolution. At the end of the talk, we will discuss how we can modify our teaching to better incorporate this incredible discovery!
